Native Tree Plantation for Habitat Restoration
Growing Forests for Wildlife and Future Generations
The Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) undertakes native tree plantation initiatives across the Eastern and Western Ghats to restore degraded habitats, strengthen wildlife corridors, improve ecosystem resilience, and support biodiversity conservation.
Many forest landscapes have been impacted by invasive species, habitat fragmentation, unsustainable land use, and climate-related pressures. Through carefully planned native tree plantations, BCT helps accelerate ecological recovery while recreating habitats that support birds, pollinators, herbivores, and large mammals such as elephants, gaur, and tigers.
Our Approach
BCT prioritizes the planting of locally native species that naturally occur within the landscape. Species selection is guided by ecological suitability, wildlife value, and long-term restoration goals.
Our plantation program includes:
- Site assessment and restoration planning.
- Removal of invasive species where necessary.
- Selection of native tree, shrub, and grass species.
- Raising saplings from locally collected seeds.
- Community-led plantation drives.
- Post-planting maintenance and monitoring.
- Survival assessment and adaptive management.
We focus on creating diverse, self-sustaining ecosystems rather than monoculture plantations, ensuring that restored areas resemble natural forests over time.
Benefits of Native Tree Plantation
Native tree plantations contribute to:
- Restoration of degraded forest ecosystems.
- Improved habitat and food resources for wildlife.
- Strengthening of wildlife corridors and landscape connectivity.
- Increased carbon sequestration and climate resilience.
- Enhanced soil fertility and erosion control.
- Improved groundwater recharge and watershed protection.
- Conservation of native plant diversity.
Community and Youth Engagement
BCT actively involves local communities, indigenous groups, students, volunteers, and corporate partners in tree plantation activities. These efforts foster environmental awareness, strengthen local stewardship, and create a shared commitment to conservation.
Long-Term Vision
Our vision is to restore native forests that sustain wildlife, protect water resources, capture carbon, and support healthy ecosystems for generations to come. Every tree planted is a step toward rebuilding resilient landscapes across the Eastern and Western Ghats.
